Generating Production Backends on Amazon Bedrock

A developer tools company turns a plain-English description into a complete backend project. Amazon Bedrock on Amazon Web Services (AWS) designs the data model, proven generators write the code, and one guardrail covers every schema generation.

THE PROBLEM

The problem.

Every new backend starts with the same work: database models, endpoints, sign-in, user roles and access rules. Developers write it by hand every time. When our client timed five reference applications built the traditional way, each took an average of 182 developer hours.

The platform had problems too. Production ran as one container on a shared server, with the accounts database on a local disk. Users brought their own AI model keys, so the company could not charge for AI use or apply one content policy to what the model produced.

THE APPROACH

What we built.

01

The model designs, generators write

A model on Amazon Bedrock reads the user's description and designs the data model in under 90 seconds. Proven code generators then write the project in any of ten technology stacks, so the output compiles the same way every time. Claude Haiku 4.5 is the default because it is fast and inexpensive, with eleven other models available on Amazon Bedrock.

02

Paid in credits, guarded by policy

Because the company now pays for the model, it charges users in credits instead of asking for their keys. Every schema generation passes through an Amazon Bedrock guardrail that refuses out-of-policy code requests, filters harmful content and attempts to override its instructions, and masks personal data. We tuned it over five versions so it blocks what it should without getting in the way of ordinary field names.

03

Run it straight away

Users can run their generated project immediately in a sandbox. Each sandbox is its own isolated AWS Lambda MicroVM with no AWS permissions, so user-generated code never runs next to the platform.

04

A real production platform

The platform runs on Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate behind Amazon CloudFront and AWS WAF, with Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL replacing the old local database. Every merge to main deploys automatically, and we run it as a managed service with a monthly review of model errors, guardrail interventions and cost.

THE OUTCOME

The results.

The same five reference applications took an average of 48 minutes on the platform instead of 182 hours, and a working backend costs about US$5.03 in developer time and model cost instead of US$1,137.50, 99.6% less. More than 30 paying users have generated more than 100 projects, all under one content policy.

LESSONS LEARNED

What we learned.

Our first guardrail settings were too strict and blocked ordinary schema fields, so we now review interventions every week and tune them in small steps. We also split the infrastructure into separate stacks for the network, data, API, sandbox and releases, so one failed change can no longer roll back everything at once.
